Brothers,
“The first and most important step towards success is the feeling that we can succeed.
” Nelson Boswell
Can the Alpha Sigma Phi Delta Iota Alumni Association be a great success? Simply put, YES. I would like to thank and recognize everyone who has invested their time and/or money into this association over the last few months trying to achieve this goal.
The burning questions, “What is our purpose?
” and “Where does the money go?
” I hope to answer these two questions by the end of this newsletter. For those of you that have not visited the website and seen the purpose statement, here you go.
The primary purpose of the association is to provide a centerpiece for alumni to communicate and support one another. Alpha Sigma Phi - Delta Iota Alumni Association will provide every alumni and active brother with a network of support and guidance. The commitment “To Better the Man” will be the constant theme for all decisions, communications, and events. The association will recognize achievement among alumni and ensure an avenue for continued alumni involvement. The undergraduate chapter will use the alumni for leadership, financial advice, social interaction, and academic development. We will work directly with the undergraduate chapter to ensure constant communication between the active chapter, the alumni association and National Headquarters.
What does that mean to you? To me, the statement holds the meaning of friendship, philanthropy, loyalty, leadership, giving or needing help, and always using my fraternal experience to become a better person.
The current leadership of this association does not have all the answers. Many ideas have been discussed concerning finances. We have reached our initial goal of raising $2000.00. The next goal is $4000.00. We are diligently working towards having the infrastructure to make financial decisions representative of 300 plus people. Until that structure is in place, we are asking you to trust the alumni council.
We have decided to establish two annual scholarships to be given each fall. These scholarships have no dollar amount attached at this point. I do know that one will be based on Academic Achievement and the other on Community Involvement. The recipient will be recognized with a plaque, but the money will be used to purchase new robes, manuals, insurance, etc. It has also been decided to allocate a small amount of money to Pig Roast each year.
In fairness to all, alumni functions will not be paid out of this money. Instead alumni functions, such as golf tournaments, dinners, transportation to pig roast, etc will be done in the most cost efficient way possible. We are working hard towards a fall golf tournament and a formal by the end of the year, possibly a combination.
Regardless of where we go from here, there will always be a financial piece to the puzzle. It is not the only piece, but a very important piece. We will allocate this money to worthy projects. Every member of the alumni council is happy to discuss positive ideas about how the funds should be allocated. There will soon be a contact list for the alumni council.
We have accomplished some great things over the last few months. Communication among the alumni has improved tremendously. The active chapter has consulted the alumni council on several key issues about their future.
Please add to the momentum. I challenge each of you to reach out to 3 guys and discuss the possibilities of this association. I look forward to 300 phone calls.
